Summary form only given. A comparative analysis of tape heads with two spin valve designs is presented: spin valves with synthetic free and pinned layers (SF-SAF/AF) (A. Veloso and P.P. Freitas, J. Appl. Phys., vol. 87, no. 9, pp. 5744-5746, 2000) vs. spin valves with a conventional free layer and a synthetic pinned layer (SAF/AF).
