Abstract
Summary form only given. For a shielded GMR head, the magnetic flux penetrates into the GMR element from the ABS side of the sensor, and decays to approximately zero at the top of the element. Therefore, the efficiency of a shielded GMR head is generally low. In order to increase the efficiency of shielded GMR heads, a back flux-guide is introduced and discussed based computer modeling. Due to its small reluctance as compared to air, the flux-guide effectively increases the flux at the top of the GMR element, leading to an increment of average flux in the GMR element. This in turn results in an enhanced GMR.
