Abstract
Summary form only given. For future increase in an areal density of magnetic recording, carbon protective layer of the recording media should become thinner and thinner. In this report, structural features of highly durable thin carbon layers (< 5 nm) are described in terms of underlying medium materials. A highly durable sputter-deposited carbon film of less than 5 nm can be made by setting a 1 nm Pt layer on the Co-Cr films without any carbide formation.
