            Abstract :
Summary form only given. The origin of the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy K/sub u/ in [Co/X]/sub n/ multilayers (X=Pt, Pd, etc) consists of a volume anisotropy K/sub v/ in the Co layers and an interface anisotropy K/sub s/ at the Co/X interface. The role of the interlayer X in such anisotropies has not been clearly understood yet. In this study, the change of K/sub u/ of Co/Pt multilayers by inserting Pd interlayers into Pt layers have been investigated in order to determine the dominant factors which affect K/sub v/ and K/sub s/.
