Abstract
A novel single stage electronic ballast topology using a single switch with unity power factor is presented in this paper. The proposed circuit consists of an integrated buck-boost stage that is operating in the discontinuous conduction mode to provide high power factor and a single switch current fed resonant inverter to stabilize the lamp current. The proposed circuit configuration also prevents the high resonant current from flowing through the switch so that the switch conduction loss is minimized. The proposed topology presents a low cost and compact electronic ballast design method. Closed loop circuit is also implemented to provide lamp current regulations against any surges in the main AC line. SIMETRIX 5.0 simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the feasibility of the proposed circuit on a 26 W lamp. Final results confirmed that a very high power factor of 0.992 and an efficiency of 92.8% are achieved for the proposed work.
