            Abstract :
The use of three generic types of radio systems for providing service to a variety of customers the British Telecom United Kingdom (BT UK) network is described. The types of systems include medium-capacity point-to-point systems, point-to-multipoint systems and low-capacity one-per-customer systems. Various radio system trials and the features that these systems provide are reviewed. The ways in which the increasing emphasis on the use of spectrum below 2 GHz for mobile service and the UK network standards restricts the choice of proprietary systems for rural applications and forces the development of new systems are discussed
