            Abstract : 
The integration of VCSELs with p-type/intrinsic/n-type (PIN) photodetectors has enabled many applications, primarily in communications links. VCSELs as optical encoders can act as non-interfering and non-contact, long-range position sensors. In this work, we analyze the use of an integrated VCSEL and non-spectrally selective PIN photodetectors in conjunction with a metallic corrugation (grating) as a lateral position sensor.
