  • Abstract
In this paper, a broadband rectangular patch antenna by using a complementary planar-patterned metamaterials is proposed. It is constructed by irregular cross gaps on the patch and ground respectively. Simulation and optimization show that both the impedance bandwidth and the radiation pattern bandwidth of the antenna are remarkable enhanced to 910 MHz (from 1.61 GHz to 2.52 GHz). Demonstrated to the left handed characteristics, the antenna´s main lobe direction is changed to the horizon forward, instead of the vertical upward, and in the pass band the antenna has 5 dB average gain, and the gain is flat in the entire band.
