Abstract :
A novel trellis encoder that shapes the spectrum of the transmitted signal to minimize its out-of-band power is proposed. The new encoder uses a pulse shaping filter bank. The filter bank is optimized to reduce the bandwidth of the transmitted signal. Compared to M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), the resulting new modulation schemes allow an increase in the bandwidth efficiency by up to 0.5 b/s/Hz or a decrease in the signal power by about 1 dB
