Abstract
Vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays have been laterally coupled by a variety of methods. This laser coupling can be used to create electrically steerable arrays for communication applications as well as increased-power single-mode lasers. In this work, we describe evanescent coupling of implant-defined VCSEL arrays. Using a coupled-propagator coherence theory, the coupling mechanism and determinants of degree of coherence are examined and comparisons between the theory and fabricated devices are presented.
