Abstract :
This article reports on the optimisation of a transverse flux, linear oscillating generator based on transient three dimensional finite element analysis. The generator is intended for use in a free-piston Stirling engine. A quasi-Halbach translator design is proposed. An optimisation approach that minimises overall mass while maintaining a set minimum power output and efficiency is described. Simulated results shows that the proposed topology compares well with previous designs and also emphasises the importance of taking the losses associated with varying flux into consideration for this machine topology.
