    Summary form only given. Understanding the behavior of domains in the head is critically important in write head design. As the recording density approaches 100 Gbit/in/sup 2/ and higher, the dimension of the write head will be in the deep sub-micron region. In contrast to the traditional heads, in which domain wall motion is minimal, drastic domain rearrangement will take place during the head field reversal in these extremely small heads. Remanent head field will also become significant as a result of ferromagnetic exchange. In this paper, a 3-D micromagnetic model has been utilized to simulate single pole heads with a soft under layer in a perpendicular recording scheme. It has been found that the domain structure in the head at such small scales depends largely on the overall geometry of the head. By engineering the head structure, near-zero remanent head field has been achieved.
