Abstract :
A concatenated coded modulation scheme for error control in satellite-based land mobile communication systems is presented. The concatenated scheme uses a set of multiplexed inner trellis codes with a (n,k) Reed-Solomon outer code. Error performance is analyzed in the presence of both Rayleigh and Rician fading channels. As the parallel implementation of the trellis codec acts as the interleaver and deinterleaver, block interleaving with its associated synchronization problems is no longer needed in this system. To minimize the delay caused by this type of diversity in time, the minimum interleaving length as a function of the fading parameters is given
