Abstract :
Summary form only given. The authors present results from magneto-optical studies of different Co and magnetite-based nanoparticle systems (Co, Fe/sub 3/O/sub 4/, Mn/sub 0.5/Fe/sub 2.5/O/sub 4/, Co/sub 0.5/Fe/sub 2.5/O/sub 4/, Ni/sub 0.5/Fe/sub 2.5/O/sub 4/) of 8 to 15 nm diameter deposited on Al and Cu substrates. A strong influence of the particle size distribution and composition on the magneto-optical properties is observed for all type of particles. The sign of the magneto-optical Kerr effect is inverted as compared to reference bulk or thin film compounds. The magnitude of the Kerr rotation is relatively large (50% of the bulk value) for all nanoparticles systems based on magnetite.
