Urban and motorway control centres-bridging the gap within ROMANSE!

The evolution of both urban and motorway network control within the UK has resulted in two separate, and almost incompatible, systems. As a result there has developed a large gap between the two. This paper describes: 1) the steps that have been taken within the ROMANSE (Road Management System for Europe) project to bridge the gap, in and around Southampton, 2) the differences between network control and traveller information, and 3) the lessons learnt from Europe, and how these have been introduced and will continue to be developed and enhanced further within ROMANSE 2
