Abstract :
Economic evaluations and comparisons of single mode optical systems based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques are discussed (starting from the present-day costs and taking into account the cost trend resulting from performed evaluations and forecasts) in order to evaluate and plan the possible introduction of this technology into different areas of the public telecommunication network. The authors conclude that in the broadband distribution network, WDM technique seems a promising solution for obtaining remarkable cost reduction in the near future, in particular in the fiber-sharing approach. As far as the long-haul network is concerned, convenience areas of applications can be identified, but considerable component developments are necessary before the expected high performance and low cost of future multichannel WDM systems will be available
