Abstract
Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation programs are finding increasing applications in the design of highly complex power systems. These design applications involve studies that use the simulation program in novel ways and for purposes including optimization, sensitivity and tolerance analysis. This paper presents an overview of the methodologies used for extending the capabilities of conventional EMT programs to the design of emerging power systems. Emphasis is placed on methods rooted in interfacing an EMT program with other peripheral algorithms such as run-control, optimization, and sensitivity analysis. The paper partially summarizes the investigations of the IEEE Taskforce on interfacing techniques for simulation tools.
