  • Abstract
Designers of digital voice/data systems for commercial aircraft can make use of new, very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) chips to achieve new levels of functionality, within the bounds of existing weight and cost constraints. This paper considers several alternative architectures for such systems and presents a suggested approach using the latest in VLSI products. Specific communication protocols covered are that of integrated services digital network (ISDN) and the local operating network system known as LONWORKS, VLSI chips examined in some detail are the Motorola MC68360 and MC68302 communications processors, and the MC143450 NEURON CHIP used in LONWORKS
