Abstract :
A brief description is given of the principles outlined in CCITT recommendation X.31, which constitutes the first point of reference for the integration of packet services in the narrowband integrated-services digital network (ISDN). The architectural problems that arise when trying to integrate the new narrowband and broadband packet services into ISDN. Remarks are made concerning ISDN developments carried out by Italtel. These developments confirm that distributed switching exchanges, such as the LINEA UT, are able to provide narrowband and, later on, broadband ISDN services by adding new hardware and software modules to the basic configuration
