Abstract :
Summary form only given. Surface magnetism of 4d transition metals is significantly different from the bulk magnetism. In Pd fine particles, the appearance of ferromagnetism in the surface layer was found by Taniyama et al. (1995). In contrast, the doping of Fe to Pd fine particle results in the magnetic dead surface layer. In this work, to clarify the origin of this peculiar surface magnetism, we investigate the magnetic structure at the surface of PdFe (2.0 at.% Fe) fine particles. Furthermore, to obtain information about the change in electronic structure in the particle surface, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at Pd L/sub 2/, L/sub 3/ edges were performed.
