Abstract
Shortwave radio broadcast stations are often located in the vicinity of air traffic routes and even near airports. Aircraft flying in the vicinity of such broadcast stations may be exposed to extremely high radiated electromagnetic fields, which may interfere with on board electronic systems and radio receivers. This paper presents a simple approach, based on the use of electronic worksheets (e.g., “Lotus”, “Excel”, etc.) for estimating the “radiation envelopes” (i.e., the radiation pattern) of the station. A similar approach was applied for electromagnetic coupling computations. This approach requires only the antenna manufacturer´s radiation patterns (in all slewing modes), and the operational modes of the transmitters
