Abstract :
We have acquired three-dimensional (3-D) multicomponent georadar data across braided river sediments deposited adjacent to the Alpine Fault in New Zealand. Strong reflections were observed in the co- and cross-polarized 100 MHz data sets to traveltimes as great as 400 ns. The high amplitudes of dipping reflections in the cross-polarized data were a consequence of the oblique orientation of sedimentary structures relative to the two antenna orientations. To obtain reliable subsurface structural information, a 3-D multicomponent imaging algorithm was applied to the data. The resultant pairs of images contain complementary information that should eventually allow the physical properties of the subsurface to be determined.
