Abstract
This paper presents unique characteristics of dynamic overvoltage phenomena due to transformer energizing. The inrush current during the energizing can interact adversely with the capacitor bank and gives rise to dynamic overvoltage phenomena. This is especially true when both transformer and capacitor banks are energized simultaneously such as during a recloser operation. A system with low short circuit capacity and damping is particularly prone to dynamic overvoltage. Therefore, this paper also investigates the impact of damping on dynamic overvoltage phenomena.
