Abstract
We present an experimental investigation of cross-layer effect caused by fibre four-wave mixing (FWM) wavelength converters. Measurements, performed on a 40-km long standard fibre link located in a field-trial network, suggest that the use of such converters may induce power penalties as high as 2.9 dB on the packet error rate (PER) of Internet Protocol (IP) applications. We also present empirical equations that describe a relation between PER and the optical signal-to-noise ratio degradation induced by these wavelength converters.
