Abstract :
The technological challenges presented by filmless radiology and the benefits to be accrued through its use are discussed. The author finds that the principal technological challenges posed by digital medical images that need to be addressed by digital imaging network systems (DINS) are the large amount of data to be processed and transmitted (i.e., system response), and the need to ensure acceptable diagnostic quality of the images. An advantages of DINS technology is that it has the potential to improve health care delivery while, at the same time, reducing the cost of radiological exams
