Abstract :
Keeping track of mobiles location in a cellular system is an important issue for future personal communication systems. A new location registration scheme for cellular systems is proposed. It is based on a periodic question-and-answer cycles initiated by base stations. In every cycle, a set of systematic questions is sent by the base stations and the mobile units reply to their corresponding base stations with either `1´ or `0´. From the answers received, one can construct estimates concerning which cells a mobile unit belongs to. An analysis of the performance of this registration scheme is provided when the questions are based on binary cutting of the ID´s of the mobiles
