Abstract :
The author presents an overview of the Consultative Committee for Telephony and Telegraphy (CCITT) standards-making process as it relates to the development of network management standards, beginning with an overview of the goals of open systems interconnection (OSI) management and the market forces directing these goals. The standards-making process at both the international study group level and the corresponding USA national level (i.e., US CCIT), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) T1, is then discussed. The cross-hierarchical organizational relationship between the two major US groups defining network management standards for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the CCITT is presented, followed by an overview of the areas being addressed by these groups. Finally, a broad overview of the network management activities in progress within the CCITT Study Groups and the ANSI T1 Committee is presented
