Abstract :
Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) can be advantageously utilized as external modulators because they can perform simultaneously two functions: amplification and modulation. When the device is used in a subcarrier multiplexed system the modulation linearity is a crucial property. Theoretical and experimental investigations are presented with the aim to characterize the modulation linearity. By proper adjustment of the operation point and environmental parameters and by careful optical matching the device provides better modulation linearity than the traditionally used Mach Zehnder modulator.
