Abstract :
The main purpose of the present study is to further understanding of ice surface breakdown. The effects of several parameters such as air temperature, freezing water conductivity and voltage polarity on the 50% lightning impulse breakdown voltage were investigated. An electrode configuration of two metallic hemispherical capped rods of 12 mm in diameter half submerged in ice was used for all experiments. The results showed that an increase in air temperature or freezing water conductivity led to a decrease in the breakdown voltage of the ice surface. The influence of voltage polarity on the breakdown voltage depended on ambient air temperature and freezing water conductivity
