Abstract :
The has already been more than three decades experience on insulators for gas insulated high voltage apparatus. Several different solutions for field control were developed successfully. For gas insulated apparatus grading electrodes are state of the art, today, the assembly of which is comparatively simple. However, in case of composite insulators, solutions are investigated, which result in even lower complexity and smaller dimensions. The silicone housing can be designed with a high flexibility of shape and different additives. Thus, field control can be achieved by means of the design of the silicone-housing and the shape of the insulator flanges instead of including separate grading electrodes. This article describes a way in which composite insulators are more competitive compared to porcelain insulators in the high voltage apparatus technology
