  • Abstract
An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) based high speed (>150 Mb/s) multimedia slotted ring is proposed for LAN/MAN/B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital networks), and simulation results showing performance superior to some existing slotted rings are presented. It is not a hybrid ring. All media (voice, video, and data) are supported by a nonisochronous ATM. Both connection and connectionless modes are provided for the logical link control (LLC) layer. By destination release of used cells and an efficient hogging-prevention mechanism, throughput several times higher than that of IEEE 802.6 DQDB can be achieved. Performance comparison with some existing slotted rings is shown. To mix delay-sensitive video and delay-tolerant data information, a priority control mechanism that can guarantee the maximum delay of the high-priority class is proposed
