Abstract
This paper presents current interruption of direct current in a vacuum. Arc voltage of the vacuum circuit breaker is several 10 V, therefore current limiting effect by the arc voltage is not expected. In addition, the arc continues to ignite in a stable state for a long arcing time such as several 100ms. It is well known that the application of transverse magnetic field to the arc reduces the arcing life time. Authors would like to clarify the relation between the arcing life time and the magnetic field by basic viewpoints. The magnetic field application from the transverse direction to the arc can induce instability phenomenon. In this paper, authors show some experimental result that applying the magnetic field to the arc.
