  • Abstract
High vacuum provides an outstanding insulating medium in vacuum interrupters along with extremely-fast recovery of dielectric strength following a current interruption which is usually accomplished at the first current zero after the contacts part. These features combined with a very-short contact movement (5-10 mm) requirement make a vacuum interrupter suitable for many important applications in electrical power systems which are discussed in this paper.
