  • Abstract
The collision between right-turn vehicles and pedestrians non-motorized vehicle is very common in signalized intersections which are not set exclusive right-turn phase. As a result of the blind area caused by the difference of radius between inner wheels, the collisions become more possible and serious. Depending on incomplete statistics of Nanjing in 2011, the laws of collision between right-turn large vehicles and pedestrians/non-motorized vehicle are analyzed in terms of intersection characteristics, collision point and vehicle operating rules. The main cause of the crash are discussed such as the blind area, the unreasonable location relationship of right-turn lane and low-speed lane, incoordination between right-turn phase and pedestrians/non-motorized vehicle phase. Finally, some countmeases are proposed including eliminating the blind area caused by the difference of radius between inner wheels, the early-warning for the pedestrians/non-motorized vehicle when the large vehicles turn right, optimization design of intersection and the adjustment of signal control.
