Abstract
This paper describes the design, control and testing of a new magnetic actuator based operating mechanism which combines the advantages of conventional solenoid driving and PM latching. The new design has been successfully developed for a 320 A, 1.5 kV vacuum switch (DVS10CB type), used in a prototype 300 kVA three phase tap changer. Fifteen actuators were needed in the tap changer system. Extensive testing showed their performance to be satisfactory
