Abstract
In a linear synchronous motor, with a conventional surface mounted magnet arrangement, the full flux per pole flows through both the back iron and the stator. Here, the authors present a novel design for a split-pole magnet arrangement in which only half the flux per pole is present. Thus the amount of material required in the back iron structure can be halved
