Abstract
The paper describes the use of a developed model for a series capacitor protected by a metal oxide varistor (MOV) based on the describing function method (or method of harmonic balance) in short circuit studies. Symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults are studied using compensation techniques and the implementation of the method in classical short circuit analysis. The results are compared with the existing empirical model
