  • Abstract
University Town has specific set of characteristics (e.g. spatial distribution of building heights and structures, electrical equipment, highly dense human population) that determine the likelihood of lightning occurrence. In many cases the safety of faculty members, students, buildings and equipment is severely affected by lightning incident. However, regardless of its importance the research related to lightning occurrences is rather limited. Due to the limitation of the existing standards for risk assessment of lightning disaster, this paper will put forward a method, that based on the lightning location information, can potentially be used for risk assessment using statistical analysis of spatio-temporal distribution of lightning locations, occurrence frequency and corresponding intensities. In order to demonstrate the applicability of our method we apply the proposed algorithm to data gathered on the campus located in Pearl River Delta Region from 1999 to 2008.
