Abstract
This paper is focused on the trade-off between lossy shape coding and the transform gain achieved by contour-adaptive texture coding methods. A texture model is established which addresses synthetical object borders (e.g. stemming from texture mapping) as well as “natural” borders. For both situations, intra coding and DCT basis functions are assumed. The results presented in this paper underline the importance of lossless shape coding when an increased transform gain is desired. Furthermore, the influence of the orientation of the contour approximation error is discussed briefly with respect to texture variances
