Abstract :
Obstacles to the realization of the full potential of R&M~CAE (reliability and maintainability/computer-aided engineering) are discussed. Particular attention is given to poorly defined R&M~CAE requirements, the need for part/material models and parameter libraries, and the need to develop R&M analysis tools. The author also discusses the need to reassess the basic approach to R&M once the R&M~CAE tool kits are complete and the parts and materials models and libraries are available
