Abstract :
The author discusses various compression strategies for circuit-switched and packet-switched networks and comments on their performance from networking aspects. The coding strategy that is suitable for the packet-switched network is described. Based on the vector-quantization technique, a novel algorithm for providing guaranteed image quality with a variable bit rate is presented. Finally, several research issues and future technological trends in this area are briefly explored
