Abstract
This paper studies the effectiveness of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique in controlling adaptive antenna arrays. The PSO uses the Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio in its fitness function to find a set of array weights that configure a rectangular array to effectively maximize the power towards a desired direction and avoid direction of interferers. The presented experiments show that the PSO is capable of solving the problem using less number of fitness function evaluations than a standard Genetic Algorithm. Moreover, the gain levels in the direction of nulls are calculated and it is shown that the PSO obtains better values for the same number of iterations.
