Abstract
The services, system capabilities, technology options, network architectures and technology deployment options for each of the serving areas of the access network are identified. Each of the technology deployment options has its own advantages and disadvantages relative to installed first cost, fiber presence, operations, etc. The access network should evolve to accommodate the varying technologies necessary to meet customer requirements and lessen the service requirements challenge. Almost all network operators agree that it is time to redirect attention to the access network. Significant investments are required to materialize the revenue opportunities and reduce the operational costs
