  • Abstract
The single fiber passive double star (PDS) is a scheme for introducing fiber systems to subscriber areas. To compete with the cost of copper based systems. TCM (time compression multiplexing) seems to be the answer. The authors´ PDS system usign TCM offers narrowband services with an average bit rate of 768 kbps to 16 customers. Analog and logic LSIs and optoelectronics have been developed. Their system can support simultaneous narrowband interactive services and video distribution by wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) using silica waveguides. An optical network unit (ONU) located in a subscriber premise which fits the optical receiver and circuitry into only 300 cc has been developed
