Nanfen iron mine is one of the largest open-pit metal mines in China, where mining depth is over 500m now. With increasing of mining depth there, to keep the mine slope stability becomes a more and more difficult task, hence, the mine should be transferred into underground mining at a suitable depth. It is a complicated system engineering problem for transferring a large scale open-pit into underground mining. In this paper, considering to get the maximum profits for miming the whole deposit, a level layering diagram optimization method is proposed, and based on the mining conditions of the Nanfen mine, by using the optimization method, a conclusion that the rational depth of transferring open-pit into underground mining in the mine should be at +10m elevation is given out.
