Abstract
A general framework is presented for the interpolation and approximation of functions of two variables. By applying the general concept to transfer functions of zerophase finite impulse response (FIR) filters, an efficient algorithm for the design is given. This algorithm is referred to as an approximation approach. Using this algorithm certain difficulties encountered by the interpolation approach can be avoided. A practical technique to incorporate prescribed constraints is given
