Abstract :
This paper documents IBM\´s use of powder coatings to replace liquid organic paints for decorative finishing of IBM products to achieve improved environmental and cost benefits. The technical accomplishments achieved by a multi-divisional team are described which resulted in the elimination of the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and solid waste disposal associated with liquid organic paints in selected applications. Additionally, this paper identifies the type of cost savings that can be realized in the decorative finishing of computers that makes the use of powder coatings a "win-win" situation.
