Abstract :
The authors discuss flaws recently found in two classical and nearly universally used formulations of generalized reflection and transmission coefficients as they relate to a nonuniform waveguiding structure (NOWS). It has been demonstrated that those formulations, Rs(χb) by S.A. Schelkunoff (1943) and Rw(χ) by L.R. Walker and N. Wax (1946), may not adequately characterize reflected or transmitted power if either the source or the receiver or both are located within a NOWS. When they are both outside of a NOWS but in some way use a reflecting device within such a structure, the potential for error still remains. It is also shown here that Rw(χ) does not seem to be even a meaningful candidate for the voltage reflection coefficient. Several intuitively satisfying reasons are provided on why discrepancies between theoretical and measured values were not detected earlier
