Abstract :
This paper proposes an active telecommunication system using laser beams transmitted through the air. A laser transmitter is newly designed and a beam control system is investigated for switching optical links or tracking mobile terminals. Experiments revealed that the system transmits broadband signals at 1 Gbit/s with a low bit error rate of 10/sup -11/, and successfully switches optical links in as little as 60 ms.
