Evolution of an electrical safety culture

Utilization of NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace and CSA Z462 Workplace Electrical Safety in a multi-dimensional workplace is critical to obtaining zero incidents. This paper presents the experiences of one industrial construction contractor toward creating and sustaining an electrical safety culture to eliminate incidents. Safety management strategies were developed as part of comprehensive measures to effectively manage electrical safety in the workplace. Internal and external relationships were reviewed as they related to both shared and differing values. Focus began on defining the values that drove safe decisions and actions. A culture change was not sustainable until safety values were shared among members. Management and individuals were responsible to take action for safety. It was those actions, more than words which reflected institutional values. Individual ownership and responsibility of safety principles applied to everyone. Ownership of safety by every person was critical.
